Language is an instrument for communicating thoughts. In fact, language is essentially thought. Thought is personal and connected to one's experience. Effective writing is the representation of one's experience in clear, interesting, precise and logical manner.

Writing, which is a productive skill, can be acquired through continuous and consistent practice. Paying due attention to form and structure, using grammatically correct language for expressing meaning, choosing the most appropriate words to express one's thoughts, adhering to conventions of spelling and punctuations are all characteristics of effective communication.

The process of writing starts much before the actual act of writing commences. The writer's experience, his perceptions, understanding, attitude, etc., have created some hazy thoughts in his mind even if he is never expected to write. When a person decides to write or is asked to write, he draws from this store to cull out the thoughts most suited for the kind of written communication he is targeting. This brainstorming is a pre-writing exercise. Many of the tasks we have given in this section allow the writer to draw from what he reads in the comprehension passage given in the same week. Some models have also been presented along with valuable hints and ideas. In some tasks, useful vocabulary has been given to compensate for any kind of linguistic inadequacy. At the 9 to 11 class levels, the writing syllabus of CBSE has been followed. Students will benefit immensely from the practice this material is likely to provide as the tasks have been set by experienced teachers, teaching at the same class levels.

For best results, ensure that the students complete the reading comprehension exercises before the writing tasks, so that reading comprehension acts as pre-writing support.
