PROFILE

Jharna Dey has 37 years of experience as a teacher. She has been teaching Mathematics in Dev Samaj Modern School, New Delhi, for the last 20 years.

Ms Dey, having completed school education in 1968 from Kolkata, obtained her BSc and Bed degrees from the University of Calcutta in 1971 and 1974 respectively with distinction in each. In 1976, she did her MEd from the Central Institute of Education, University of Delhi. In the year 2000, she completed the Educational Leadership Programme (ELP) from the Centre for Educational Management and Development (CEMD).

Apart from authoring books for prestigious private publishing houses, she has authored several text books, manuals and activity books on Mathematics for NCERT. She has co-authored Lab Manuals for the Central Board of Secondary Education as well. As consultant for Micro Computer Services (e-learning), she was involved in developing a CD to present interactive and illustrative methods of understanding the fundamentals of Mathematics.

A consultant with egurucool.com, an online educational web portal, Ms Dey has conducted online tutorials chat for Class IX as subject expert during which she interacted with students from across the world. She is also a resource person for the foundation course of ‘Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan’ conducted by the Centre for Educational Management (CEMD) on behalf of the Directorate of Education.

As Master Training Instructor for the DAV group of schools, she has conducted sessions on ‘Pedagogy of Mathematics’ for DAV schools in Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi.

Ms Dey has several awards to her credit. Among these are the Best Teacher Award from the Lion’s Club in 2007, Millennium National Teacher Award from the Institute for Environment, Yoga and Social Security in 2006, Sukriti Kala Samman from the same institute in 2005. She was awarded the first prize for making the most powerful telescope at the State level competition held in 1989 on ‘Making lens for telescope and fabrication of telescope’.

Other than Mathematics, Ms Dey has varied interests ranging from theatre to cricket. She performs in street plays for underprivileged children.

She is a keen sport enthusiast having represented both Calcutta University and Delhi University in Women’s Cricket Tournaments; is a three star holder in track events including long jump and high jump; and has participated in badminton, table tennis, carom playing competitions while in college.
