PROFILE
Mridusmita Sharma has been teaching at Delhi
Public School, East of Kailash for the last
ten years.
She graduated with honours in Zoology from
Gauhati University, Assam, in 1996 as also
BEd three years later from the same institution.
She did her MEd from Bharatiya Shiksha Parishad,
Lucknow and MSc in Ecology and Environment
from Sikkim Manipal University, Gangtok.
At Delhi Public School where she teaches
Maths and the languages, Ms Sharma has been
entrusted an array of other responsibilities
ranging from preparing children for various
academic and cultural activities, writing
scripts for skits and dramas, to teaching
and supervising dance and teaching workshops
organised in the school from time to time.
Given the fiercely competitive education
system in the country today, teaching is no
longer seen as a relatively easy job. How
much a child can retain is directly proportional
to how much time and effort a teacher can
invest in him/her. In fact, only a sensitive
teacher can redeem a system that puts a premium
on completing the syllabus on time.
“Today’s children face a lot
of pressure, hence it is up to us teachers
to make our children feel at ease and confident
enough to take up any challenge in the right
spirit. After all, there is always a fun way
to explain the toughest concept to a child
and make sure that it is understood,”
argues Ms Sharma who has a six-year-old daughter
studying in the same school.
Dealing with little children is by no means
child’s play, she says. She believes
it is far more challenging today than it ever
was adding that the main idea is to “put
less pressure on the children, give them a
healthy atmosphere, a lot of breathing space
and watch them blossom.”
