PROFILE
Suryakumari Dennison belongs to that rare fraternity
of teachers who teach because they have always
wanted to. She had, as she herself says a "congenital
compulsion" to teach; a schoolgirl fantasy
that matured into an enduring passion.
Dennison
completed Honours in English from the prestigious
Jesus and Mary College, New Delhi in 1974. She
went on to pursue her MA -also in English-at Lady
Shri Ram College, New Delhi, in 1976. She also
did a Diploma in English Studies at the Central
Institute of English and Foreign Languages, Hyderabad,
1977.
Dennison, who has been teaching
for the last thirty years, began her career in
academics as a lecturer at Miranda House, Delhi.
She also taught for some time at Jesus and Mary
College before moving to Bangalore in 1980 and
has been there ever since. At Bishop Cotton Girls
School, apart from teaching 'Literature in English'
to the students of Class XI and XII, Dennison
is engaged in several literary and co-curricular
activities.
She
updates herself with new trends in her subject,
which involves a lot of reading. She also writes
regularly for the Deccan Herald, one of South
India's most popular newspapers. Dennison is fond
of travelling and has already visited several
places of historical and literary interest in
India and abroad.
Today,
with many years of teaching behind her, Dennison
still feels the same enthusiasm, which she felt
when she taught her first batch of students. Teaching
is giving-she says-of time, talent, expertise,
and one's very self. Through teaching she found
her true vocation and purpose in life.
